Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas, perhaps more than any other vessel, have carried a sense of Victorian attitudes through the twentieth century, and are invaluable as a source of insight into both middle class entertainment of the period and the modes of political and social satire that such popular amusement adopted. In these sessions, music will be both the tool used for teaching and the means of inspiration. Sullivan was born in Lambeth, London. [1] His parents were Thomas Sullivan (1805–1866), a military bandmaster, clarinettist and music teacher born in Ireland and raised in Chelsea, London, and Mary Clementina (née Coghlan, 1811–1882), English born, of Irish and Italian descent. [2] Thomas Sullivan was based from 1845 to 1857 at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he was the bandmaster and taught music privately to supplement his income. [3] [4] Young Sullivan became proficient with many of the instruments in the band and had composed an anthem, "By the waters of Babylon", by the age of eight. [5] He later recalled: I was intensely interested in all that the band did, and learned to play every wind instrument, with which I formed not merely a passing acquaintance, but a real, life-long, intimate friendship.

Self taught as a singer with a background in acting, it was whilst living in Berlin, she became intrigued by the narrative direct music of Weimar composers Eisler, Hollaender and Weill, described as ‘art song: exploring themes of politics, sexuality, life’s degenerates, democracy seedier side of life, desolate love’, and on her return home was inspired by the late great AgnesBernelle performances back in Dublin’s now defunct Da Club where O’Sullivan had also started to sing.

Tallis himself was a brilliant composer, and likewise composed one of the most beautiful pieces of all time, the soaring 40-part motet Spem in Alium.

I must confess, I've never been a big fan of classicised spirituals. But a choir in Holland is taking it with full Dutch earnestness and putting on a 'Maunderfest' this October. The two would write a light opera for the Savoy, and at the same time, Sullivan a grand opera ( Ivanhoe ) for a new theatre that Carte was constructing to present British grand opera.
