The effeminate male cat took these missiles as signs of love and thus was born the kernel of nonsense that would be spun out for decades to come. Kibyoshi were not entirely escapist material though; like the popular theater of kabuki, they often brought up sensitive political issues through innuendo, as, for example, in the story of The Thousand Armed Goddess, Julienned (Daihi so senrokuhon, 1785), where the goddess was swindled out of her wealth at a ratio of 8 to 1 by a man named Tamura, which was a not-so-veiled reference to the regent named Tamura, who devalued the currency by one-eighth.

Many leading artists and writers abruptly left Marvel Comics the year before when their demands for more equitable benefits and royalties from merchandising were not met. Some of the hardest decisions about the list came from not having the complete story because we could only consider volume from within that time frame. If Eisner felt that God had broken their contract when He took Alice, Eisner had entered into a new contract, as evangelist for a new form, and finally earned the respect he and his fellow cartoonists deserved.
