Evaluation Probably the greatest strength of the capacity theory put forward by Just and Carpenter (1992) is the assumption that there are substantial individual differences in the processes used in language comprehension. DeGroot (1965, 1966; DeGroot & Gobet, 1996) provided the first indication of what this “something else” might be. In reasoning research, some logics—usually, the propositional calculus—have been used in a similar manner. The problem-space account also has the following features: • It is general enough to characterise different puzzle problems, showing the theoretical unity in many diverse instances of problem solving. • It allows us to re-interpret previous research on other problems in an informative fashion (i.e., insight problems). • It supports the standard model of memory with a limited-capacity working memory, that can retard problem-solving abilities (see Atwood & Polson, 1976, discussed later).

This laboratory allows students to design and run experiments in which subjects must search for target stimuli in a background of distractor elements, as exemplified by research by Triesman, Wolfe, Cohen, Cave, Duncan, among many others.
